MTB World Champs home ground advantage

Under 23 cross country mountain biking ace, South African Luke Roberts (BMC-SA), is hoping to continue his recent good form and gain invaluable experience with every international appearance he makes in the next couple of months as he seeks to put in a strong challenge in the green and gold at this year’s UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in Pietermaritzburg from 26 August – 1 September.

Fencing for Fitness

Of all the sports one could take part, fencing is probably one of the furthest from every one’s minds. Yet, this sport is one of the most physically straining and fulfilling sports that you could do, at least that’s what I think. I am Dana da Silva, 22 years old, from Maputo, Mozambique. I’ve been studying in South Africa almost all my life, starting from before high school all the way to university. I found fencing through The University of Witwatersrand and have been doing it for 2 and half years.

Be A Better, faster swimmer

Some of us may be content with just being able to swim or being able to dive into a pool without drowning. Others, with that drive and passion of being fish and swiftly and quickly swimming past an opponent during a swim meett may not be so satisfied with that. If you want to be the next Penny Heyns, Ryk Neethling or Natalie Du Toit, you should not only have the motivation and determination but you should also have the drive and tricks under your belt to help you not only move faster in water but also be the best in your circle and maybe in the world… who knows??

Careers in Sport: Sports Journalist

Have you ever wanted a career in sport but would rather not go on the field, court or swimming pool? If sport and writing are your passion then why not look into sports journalism. This is a form of Journalism that involves reporting and writing on sports games, events, players and other sports related topics for online and offline magazines and newspapers, television and radio. It involves not only reporting and watching sporting events, but also researching information surrounding these and investigating story leads.

Anthony Laffor: Following his dreams

Upon arriving at the sundowns training stadium, it was evident that the vibe there was different to many other football clubs. Greeted by a warm smile, it felt more like home and less like a male dominated field. Located in the east of Johannesburg at the Mamelodi Sundowns training grounds and offices, I met with 28 year-old Liberian national team captain and Mamelodi Sundowns Left wing Anthony Laffor.

Women’s Basketball breaks the mould

Basketball, soccer, and rugby are very physical sports, requiring players’ strength and power. Men have dominated these games for many years. However, women’s participation is growing and now you can find many playing professionally. Women have become just as athletic, aggressive and competitive as men. So why, once women get onto the field, court or pool, do we think about and treat them in a certain way that often involves questioning their femininity and sexuality? And why are there more opportunities for men?

Street Soccer Kicks off in SA

Determined to retain their hard-earned trophy, last year's national champions from Khayelitsha are ready to take on all-comers, as learners across South Africa prepare for the 2013 KIA Street Soccer League kicking off in May. This year's national champions will not only lift the coveted trophy, but will also stand a chance of winning a trip of a lifetime to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
